An IT manager from the Lions Club of Milton Keynes Central raised lifesaving funds for Anthony Nolan by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, after his wife received support and advice from us.
Bharat Miangar and his friend Sarah Betteridge held the expedition in Tanzania on 13th June 2014, alongside 16 friends from Milton Keynes Central and Swiss Cottage Lions Club.
Bharat's wife received a stem cell transplant in 2011 as part of her treatment for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He wanted to give back by raising awareness of our register and money to help us grow it. The final total raised was a fantastic £10,000 towards our work.
Over 6 months of hard training, all 16 climbers became good friends, working extremely hard as a team to complete this tough challenge. To reach their fundraising target they held a Casino Night as well as asking their generous friends and family for sponsorship.
Bharat Miangar said “We are all extremely proud to have completed the challenge and reached our fundraising target, it was a really inspiring experience for me to give back to the charity that supported my wife”.
Nancy Gray, Community Coordinator at Anthony Nolan, said, ‘The amount raised by the Milton Keynes Lions Club from their amazing challenge is absolutely vital in supporting our lifesaving work. It costs £100 to recruit each person to the Anthony Nolan register, so the more fundraising we do, the more potential donors we can recruit onto the bone marrow register, and the more lives we can save.’
