Bone marrow recipients take on British transplant games

The British Transplant Games, which have been held since 1978, invite organ and bone marrow transplant recipients to take part in sports ranging from football and badminton to archery and snooker. Cononley resident Michael Rice was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2004 and had a successful bone marrow transplant in 2005. Michael plays for GB Transplant Cricket and is participating in cricket and athletics at the Transplant Games this year. Michael, 30, says, ‘This has shown me just how far I have come in the eight years since my bone marrow transplant – it’s been a great way to get back into an active lifestyle. Through sport, I’ve met amazing people who have had similar experiences and have a really positive outlook on life. ‘I feel lucky to be able to play sport and be active as I know many bone marrow transplant recipients aren’t able to do this sort of thing.
