This Nurses Week, blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan is celebrating the appointment of its ninth Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at Kings College Hospital London.

Anthony Nolan funds CNS at nine hospitals across the UK in the aim of raising the standard of post-transplant care for stem cell transplant recipients.

Sarah Ware, who works at King’s College Hospital London, becomes the ninth CNS recruited and funded by Anthony Nolan since 2014, and will work to ensure that blood cancer patients are receiving the best possible care following a transplant.

Anthony Nolan has researched the provision of post-transplant care across the UK. Its most recent report, Who Cares?, highlighted inconsistencies and gaps in transplant care in the UK.

One recommendation was that not all transplant patients have a dedicated, named CNS. This gap in service provision has a detrimental impact on a patient’s quality of life and their ability to recover successfully.

Sarah, who has worked in haematology nursing and with transplant patients at King’s College Hospital since 2011, said: ‘There are so many great things about being a nurse, but the best thing is being empowered to support individuals and families throughout their recovery after transplant.

‘It is great to know that the work I am doing will make a positive impact in improving outcomes for patients and their families.’

She added: ‘Becoming the latest Anthony Nolan CNS I consider to be a huge privilege and an exciting opportunity both personally and professionally.’

Hayley Leonard, Lead Nurse at Anthony Nolan, said: ‘Nurses Week is a great opportunity to celebrate all of our fantastic clinical nurse specialists across the UK who work tirelessly to provide outstanding care to those in desperate need.’

‘I am incredibly pleased to welcome Sarah as our newest nurse specialist, and I know she will provide excellent care and support to patients and their families in King’s College Hospital’
