Barrow Sixth Form College is holding a recruitment event on Tuesday 5th March in memory of schoolgirl Alice Pyne. Alice died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, in January this year, after inspiring thousands of people to join bone marrow registers worldwide.
A bone marrow transplant can be the last chance of survival for someone with blood cancer, but Anthony Nolan can only find a matching donor for around half the people who come to them in need.
The event will take place from 11am-2pm, and anyone aged 16–30 is encouraged to sign up. The charity particularly needs more young men aged 16–30 to sign up to the register, as they account for 80% of donations yet make up just 12% of the register.
Rebecca Sedgwick, national recruitment manager for Anthony Nolan, says, “Alice was a remarkable girl – she inspired so many people while she was alive but it’s fantastic to see her legacy live on through events like these. Anyone who signs up on Tuesday could come up as a match and one day give someone with blood cancer the chance of a future.”
