Mark works as an Operations Director at Tile Giant, one of Anthony Nolan's valued corporate partners - but he also took on the London Marathon earlier this year to raise vital funds for us and save lives. In today's blog, he chats to us about his experiences:
Could you start by telling us a little about why you decided to run for Anthony Nolan?
I decided to take up the challenge because I was inspired by a dear friend who ran the marathon four years ago, and I was told by others I could never do it / I was mad to even consider it. I remember a favourite saying: 'People that say you cannot do this are imposing their personal limitations on you!'.
I was deeply impressed with the Anthony Nolan team and how they work with Tile Giant as partner to our business.
How did you raise money among your friends and colleagues?
I raised the money through suppliers, colleagues at Tile Giant, friends and family.
Tell us about training. How did the Events team at AN support you?
The training was tough, over 400 training miles, a second pair of trainers, a few physio appointments. That said I enjoyed every minute. The events team supported me with regular communications via email, phone calls and bringing all the runners together in London to truly understand the gravity of the challenge, the do's and dont's and a complete guide to looking after yourself, through pre, during and post running.
OK, so - the big day! What was the atmosphere like as you ran?
The atmosphere was simply electric. A memory up there with marriage and the birth of my two children! The Anthony Nolan cheer points were the best.....(they know this), they were the loudest and most colourful. That said, I really needed their support at mile 24. When I passed the line I was whisked up by the Anthony Nolan support team and taken to the reception party. Simply amazing...they made it so special.
What is it been like working with Anthony Nolan as a corporate partner?
Lila and the team are so engaging and supportive. They simply inspire the Tile Giant teams. I have worked with numerous partners in various businesses; however, Anthony Nolan are the elite partner that I really enjoy working with. On a personal level, to take a 16.5 stone male with no running experience and praise / complement / communicate / support / advise through a 5 month period in preparation to run a 26.2 mile course....and complete. Their support was immeasurable.
Finally…are you planning any other challenges for AN in the future?
I am sure there will be a few more challenges.....maybe, just maybe another marathon ??
