Here is little superman Calum Lambert with his dad Derek. Four year old Calum was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia last December and he very recently celebrated the major milestone of reaching 6 months post transplant.

Diane says, “We’ll never forget the day we received the call to tell us that Anthony Nolan had found a match for Calum. From that moment forward we could focus on the bone marrow transplant that was our best hope of saving Calum’s life.

Calum has shown amazing courage and resilience throughout his battle against Aplastic Anaemia.”

Calum is now on the long road to recovery but Diane and Derek are determined to give something back to thank Anthony Nolan.

“Like most little boys, Calum loves Superman and we want to try and inspire as many as possible to get involved in Hero Day to be real life superheroes. It’s a great way to help us give something back to Anthony Nolan after they saved not just Calum’s life, but ours too.

We just want to thank the charity, Calum’s amazing donor and everyone who supports this wonderful organisation.”

Anthony Nolan Hero Day

Hero Day is an annual event that takes place on the 21st November where supporters from around the country are encouraged to dress up as heroes, bake cakes and raise funds in aid of Anthony Nolan.

Calum’s nursery and school, Bellsquarry Primary will be taking part in Hero Day dressing up as their favourite superheroes and baking cakes. Calum’s friends at ABC nursery, Bright Horizons nursery, St Ninians nursery school and even Bannatynes Health Club in Livingston are also showing their support to Calum by taking part in Hero Day. If you want to sponsor Calum’s effort go to www.justgiving.com/Fiona-Ritchie12

There are 3 heroic ways for YOU to get involved.

1. GET SPONSORED TO DRESS UP AS YOUR HERO: Head into a phone box (or just get changed at home) and transform yourself into your hero for the day. Whether that’s your mum, a figure from history or someone with super powers.

2. BAKE SUPER CAKES:  Even the strongest of us can’t say no to a cake or two. Use those powers of creation to whip up some amazing treats and sell them to everyone you know for a donation.

3. TEXT TO DONATE: No time in your schedule? Don’t worry you can text HERO31 £5 to 70070 and see the money you raise go up, up and away.

Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer, such as leukaemia, by matching them to people willing to donate their bone marrow, or blood stem cells, for lifesaving transplants.

Nancy Gray, Community Fundraising Coordinator at Anthony Nolan, said: “Calum is just one of the people who our heroic supporters have enabled us to help. It costs £100 to add a potential lifesaver to our register, as you can see, every little bit raised really does make a huge difference for people like Calum and their families.

The more fundraising we do, the more potential donors we can recruit onto the bone marrow register, and the more lives we can save.”

If you want to don your lifesaving costumes and join in the Hero Day fun tell us about your fundraising and receive your free fundraising materials by emailing hero@anthonynolan.org or calling 0303 303 3002. Become a hero.
