Brothers Steven and Paul Lock are tackling the Ride London challenge for us after a bone marrow transplant saved Steve’s life 6 years ago.
On August 10 they’ll be cycling 100 miles round the capital and the Surrey countryside, raising vital funds to help us recruit more donors and save more lives.
Steve’s Story
In April 2008 Steve was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, and was told his only hope for survival was a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately his brother Paul wasn’t a match, so the search was on to find an unrelated donor.
Steve’s wife Tracey, along with his colleagues at West Midlands Fire Service, organised a series of donor recruitment days are fire stations across the West Midlands. These added many new donors to our register, any of whom could go on to save a life in future.
Eventually, after searching our register, the perfect match was found, and Steve received his life saving bone marrow transplant in October that year.
Ride London and Anthony Nolan
Since then, he’s worked extremely hard to regain his fitness. The Ride London event has helped give both brothers a focus, and they’ve been training and fundraising in preparation for the event, their second for Anthony Nolan.
Paul says: “We both cycled in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 2013 as part of the Anthony Nolan team and received fantastic support throughout the training and also on the day of the event. Steve has worked extremely hard after his illness to regain his fitness.
The brothers cycling together in last year's event
Having the event to train and fundraise for really helped to give us both focus. We will always be grateful for the work that Anthony Nolan do”
The event that Steve and Paul will be taking part in is a 100 mile ride starting in the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
The cyclists will follow closed roads through the capital and into the Surrey countryside, along the route recently made famous by the world’s best cyclists in the 2012 Olympic road race. It should be a fantastic day.
