As we count down to the Virgin London Marathon 2013, we are celebrating the people who are training and fundraising in support of Anthony Nolan.

Oxford resident Emma Johnson, 25, was inspired to fundraise for Anthony Nolan after her sister received a bone marrow transplant from an anonymous donor.

Why are you running the marathon for Anthony Nolan?

My sister was diagnosed with leukaemia from the age of two and has been battling it ever since. It had got to the point where there was not much hope left. Anthony Nolan helped us when it really mattered, to find a donor and save my sister’s life. I wanted to run the marathon for the Anthony Nolan to say thank you and, in some way, to repay them for what they have done.

What does this marathon mean to you?

Running the London Marathon has given me that chance to really prove myself and to push myself to my limits. Not only is this a personal challenge for me, but it gives me the chance to raise money and awareness about Anthony Nolan. If I can raise enough money for one person to get a second chance at life it makes it all worth it.

The Virgin London Marathon is just the stepping stone to what I am planning on doing over the next few years. This year, I’m also taking on the Three Peak Challenge and the Wolfrun.

What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened to you when running?

I have been chased by a dog, been blown in to a bush, swallowed a moth, and almost been run over while busting some dance moves - the list really is endless!

What will be the first thing you will do when you finish the race?

The first thing I do would be to see all my friends and family who have come to support me. Once I can walk without collapsing in to a heap, I will find the nearest bakery for a bag of doughnuts and a pub for a glass of wine! They are the two of my biggest weaknesses and I have given them both up whilst training.

What would you say to someone thinking of doing a challenge event for Anthony Nolan?

It is one of the hardest but the most rewarding things you will do. You are pushing yourself to your limits, doing things you never usually do and you’re helping raise money for a great cause at the same time. Go for it!

I just want to say a big thanks to all the people who have supported me over the last couple of months, especially Jennifer McBeth. It gives me confidence I need to do this. And a final big thank you to Anthony Nolan, for the support, updates and the kindness shown over the past few months. It makes it all worthwhile.
